Biography

Christian Walloth is the founder of Walloth Urban Advisors SPRL, a strategy consultancy firm for urban and regional development. Headquartered in Brussels and serving an international market, Walloth Urban Advisors supports cities, municipalities, and regions to pro-actively meet economic and demographic challenges.

Christian heads a team of advisors accumulating many years of professional experience in a variety of complementary fields—including strategy and management consulting, cultural management, urban planning, evaluation, and complex systems research—, covering the full range of services required for urban and regional strategy development.

Christian is also the author of The Theory of Emergent Nested Systems that serves as a scientific foundation for Walloth Urban Advisors’ tools and methods. In order to identify and implement a place’s unique development potentials, methods from complexity sciences are combined with single-case study methods from ethnography and effectuation approaches from entrepreneurship studies.

In addition to his role at Walloth Urban Advisors, Christian is the chair of the “Urban Systems” symposia at the bi-annual “European Meetings of Cybernetics and Systems Research” held in Vienna, and he is also the editor of the book series “Understanding Complex Urban Systems” published by Springer. He regularly contributes to international conferences and symposia covering both the urban sciences (including AESOP, ISOCARP, and IFHP conferences) as well as complexity and systems sciences (in particular ISSS and EMCSR conferences).

Christian Walloth earned his PhD in the “Advanced Research in Urban Systems” program of the University of Duisburg-Essen. Prior to his PhD studies, Christian Walloth was a consultant working for Altran Germany, Arthur D. Little, and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. He holds an engineering degree.
